Frankly, I had no plan to eat out at Kopi Plosok Sego Thiwul at first. It was my curiosity that led me there. I can tell you how glad I am now to give it a try! The foods I had at this café were tasteful. I can’t resist writing about them here for its deliciousness still lingers on my mind.

I stayed at Kebon Krapyak Cottage on the weekend. This café I am talking about right now is a part of this cottage in Sleman Jogja. First time I was there I ordered Wedang Jeruk Anget, Wedang Jahe Anget, and Sego Thiwul Goreng. Wedang Jeruk Anget means hot orange juice whereas Wedang Jahe Anget means hot ginger drink.  The hot orange juice was okay but their hot ginger drink was special!

Yes, Wedang Jahe Anget that I tasted was special! They didn’t just put the ginger in the drink but they also put a bit of cinnamon there. The mixed taste between both of them was so good. I would say the taste of the ginger and the taste of the cinnamon were in a balance! It cost me IDR 8,500 for this nice drink!

You probably have no clue what thiwul is. Before going further, let me share this important information first! Hehehe… Thiwul or tiwul is a staple food that looks like rice but its ingredient is cassava. It is known that thiwul is consumed by people in Gunung Kidul, the south area of Jogja. Thiwul is made from gaplek. Gaplek is dried peeled cassava. Gaplek is pounded into tapioca flour and this flour is used to make thiwul.

As a staple food, thiwul has fewer calories compared to rice. During the era of Japanese colonialism, many Indonesian people ate thiwul to replace rice. Nowadays, you can find instant thiwul to eat.

Talk about sego thiwul menus at Kopi Plosok Sego Thiwul, the first one that I had was Sego Thiwul Goreng. It was fried thiwul rice. This food came to my table looked like nasi goreng—fried rice. The fried rice thiwul was served with a bull’s eye egg on the top, some colorful kerupuk, and slices of cabbage.  It tasted like fried rice and it was delicious! The price of this Sego Thiwul Goreng was IDR 12,000.

After having the yummy Sego Thiwul Goreng, I couldn’t resist but came back for breakfast. This time my friend and I ordered Sego Thiwul Kumplit, Sego Thiwul Ayam Suwir, Wader Lombok Ijo, Es Jeruk, and Kopi Plosok. The dishes looked so appealing when they were served. I had to wait for more than 15 minutes for the dishes but I guess it pretty makes sense since they had to cook all, maybe from scratch.

Sego Thiwul Kumplit consisted of a portion of thiwul rice, spicy stir-fried tempeh, spicy stir-fried anchovies, spicy stir-fried vegetables, and gereh (fried dried salted fish). They were all cooked well and they tasted so good. If you order this and you are not much into spicy food, make sure you skip eating the chilies. The price of this dish was IDR 10,000.

Sego Thiwul Ayam Suwir consisted of a portion of thiwul rice, and spicy stir-fried slices of chicken. It looked pretty with green and red chilies. The dish was tasty as well. The chicken was spicy, sweet yet savory. This dish was actually a menu for children. I wonder if they added chilies because I am a grown-up… Anyways, Sego Thiwul Ayam Suwir was a packet menu with a glass of iced orange juice. The price for this packet was IDR 15,000.

Wader  Lombok Ijo was a spicy stir-fry common barb fish cooked with green chilies. The fish here are fried with flour first before they are cooked with green chilies and other spices. The dish was spicy and savory. Wader here was crunchy and you could even eat these fish as snacks! It was finger-lickin' good! It cost me IDR 15,000 for this menu.
